NC Medicaid Coverage for Psychiatry
North Carolina Medicaid covers outpatient psychiatric services including initial psychiatric evaluations, medication management visits, and follow-up care.
Since the COVID-19 public health emergency, telehealth parity laws have been strengthened, meaning NC Medicaid now reimburses for telepsychiatry at the same rate as in-person visits.
This has dramatically expanded access to psychiatric care for Medicaid beneficiaries across rural and urban North Carolina alike.
NC Medicaid underwent a major transformation in 2021 when it transitioned most beneficiaries to managed care plans. Today the majority of Medicaid beneficiaries are enrolled in one of the state's managed care organizations (MCOs) rather than traditional fee-for-service Medicaid.
Pinnacle Behavioral Health is contracted with the primary NC Medicaid managed care plans, making it easy for most beneficiaries to access our services.
If you are unsure which Medicaid managed care plan you are enrolled in, you can check your Medicaid card, log in to the NC Medicaid beneficiary portal, or call Medicaid Member Services at 1-888-245-0179. You can also call our office at (336) 828-2599 and we will help verify your coverage.
Psychiatric Services Medicaid May Cover

- Depression and anxiety treatment — antidepressant and anxiolytic medication management
- PTSD treatment — medication-assisted care for post-traumatic stress disorder
- Telehealth psychiatric visits — all services available via secure video connection statewide
NC Medicaid Psychiatry: Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral from my PCP to see a psychiatrist with NC Medicaid?
Most NC Medicaid managed care plans allow direct access to outpatient mental health providers without a primary care referral. However, requirements vary by plan. We recommend calling us to confirm before your first appointment.
How long does it take to get an appointment?
We offer same-day and next-day psychiatric appointments for new patients. This is one of the biggest advantages of our telepsychiatry model — you do not have to wait weeks or months for a psychiatric evaluation.
Can my child receive psychiatric care with NC Medicaid through Pinnacle?
Yes. We provide psychiatric services for children and adolescents covered under NC Medicaid. Child and adolescent psychiatric care includes ADHD evaluation, anxiety treatment, and mood disorder management.
What if my Medicaid plan is not listed?
If you do not see your plan listed, please call (336) 828-2599. We continually expand our insurance panel, and we can also discuss affordable self-pay options ($179 initial evaluation, $99 follow-up visits) as an alternative.
