PTSD in North Carolina: A Statewide Challenge
North Carolina has one of the largest military populations in the United States. Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg), Camp Lejeune, and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base are home to tens of thousands of active-duty service members, veterans, and military families — many of whom carry the invisible wounds of combat deployments spanning two decades of conflict. PTSD rates in NC's military communities are among the highest in the nation.
But PTSD extends far beyond the military. First responders across NC's cities face repeated trauma exposure. Survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, childhood abuse, and natural disasters (hurricanes, flooding) throughout the state carry trauma that often goes untreated for years. Rural NC communities face additional barriers — limited providers, transportation challenges, and cultural stigma around mental health.
Pinnacle Behavioral Health and Wellness provides confidential, trauma-informed psychiatric care via telepsychiatry — accessible from any NC location with same-day availability and TRICARE acceptance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a same-day appointment for PTSD in North Carolina?
Yes. Many patients schedule same-day or next-day virtual appointments. Trauma symptoms can be destabilizing — we prioritize rapid access. No referral needed.
Do you treat combat-related PTSD?
Yes. Our providers are experienced in military trauma including combat PTSD, deployment-related anxiety, TBI-associated symptoms, military sexual trauma (MST), and moral injury. We understand military culture and the unique barriers service members face.
Do you accept TRICARE?
Yes. We accept TRICARE along with BCBS, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Medicare, Medicaid, and other major plans. Care is confidential and outside military medical records.
Will seeking PTSD treatment affect my security clearance?
No. SF-86 specifically excludes counseling for combat-related conditions, grief, and family/marital issues. Seeking outpatient mental health treatment is a sign of readiness, not a career risk.
What medications are used for PTSD?
First-line PTSD medications include SSRIs (sertraline, paroxetine) and SNRIs (venlafaxine). We also use prazosin for nightmares, hydroxyzine for acute anxiety, and other evidence-based options. Treatment is personalized to your specific symptoms.
Can PTSD from non-military trauma be treated?
Absolutely. We treat all types of trauma — assault, accidents, childhood abuse, domestic violence, natural disasters, medical trauma, and loss. PTSD is not limited to combat. Anyone who has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event can develop PTSD.
