Prozac for Depression & Anxiety
Fluoxetine — The Original SSRI

What Is Prozac?
Prozac (fluoxetine) was the first selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) approved in the United States in 1987, fundamentally changing how depression and anxiety are treated worldwide. It remains one of the most widely prescribed psychiatric medications with over three decades of clinical evidence.
Prozac is unique among SSRIs for its very long half-life — the active metabolite (norfluoxetine) stays in your system for 4-16 days. This means missed doses have less impact on symptom control and discontinuation symptoms are milder than with shorter-acting SSRIs.
Available in capsule, tablet, and liquid form, Prozac offers flexible dosing options. It is also available as Prozac Weekly, a once-weekly 90 mg formulation for maintenance treatment.
What Conditions Does Prozac Treat?
Major Depression
First-line treatment for MDD with extensive evidence across age groups. Its long half-life provides stable mood support.
OCD
FDA-approved for OCD at doses up to 80 mg. Often requires higher doses than for depression to achieve optimal benefit.
Panic Disorder
Reduces frequency and intensity of panic attacks. Treatment usually starts at a lower dose to avoid initial anxiety increase.
Bulimia Nervosa
The only SSRI FDA-approved for bulimia. Typically prescribed at 60 mg to reduce binge-purge episodes.

How Does Prozac Work?
Prozac selectively blocks the serotonin transporter (SERT), preventing serotonin from being reabsorbed into nerve cells. This increases serotonin availability in the synaptic space, gradually restoring healthy serotonin signaling in brain circuits that regulate mood, anxiety, and obsessive thinking.
Prozac's extremely long half-life (2-6 days for fluoxetine, 4-16 days for its active metabolite norfluoxetine) is both its greatest strength and consideration. It means the medication reaches a very stable blood level, but it also means effects of dose changes take longer to manifest.
Most patients begin noticing improvements within 2-4 weeks, with full therapeutic effects at 6-8 weeks. Because of its activating properties, Prozac is usually taken in the morning.
